BLESSING OF HOMES

An Eastern Orthodox Christian Tradition

Every year on January 6th, "Holy Theophany", we have a service for the Blessing of the Waters.  We commemorate on this day the Baptism of Jesus Christ.  According to Eastern Orthodox Christian teachings, Jesus Christ was Baptized, not because He needed to be Baptized, but to make the waters of Baptism Life-Giving.  In other words, He sanctified the waters of Baptism for us.   During this service the Priest invokes the Holy Spirit to descend upon the water and sanctify it.  The Holy Water from this service is distributed to the congregation, and a large portion of it is retained for use in the blessing of homes.  During the months of January and February, the Priest stays quite busy visiting and blessing the homes of the faithful.

A life centered around Jesus Christ is our goal as Eastern Orthodox Christians, and the blessing of homes is a good way to start off the new year right by placing God first in your life which includes your earthly dwelling place.  Holy Theophany reminds us of the grace that we received in Holy Baptism, and as our home is blessed we ask that God will always be present in our homes, and that His Holy protection will keep us safe from all evil and harm.
